There is also a much smaller subspecies found around Australia, and the associated area. They are primarily a fish of the inshore regions of the Gulf Coast unless pressed to travel due to cold waters, when they have been known to stray as far north as Nova Scotia. During the winter months, they retreat to deeper and/or warmer waters, returning to a more active life with warming water in spring. There are some populations of "landlocked" tarpon, but they do not reach the huge proportions like those that live in the sea.

Tarpon are primarily night feeders, with mullet, crabs and shrimp being the favored foods. Conventional fishing involves stillfishing or drifting with live bait. Trolling is also done, where very heavy tackle and 100-pound test lines are the rule. Light tackle enthusiasts can also hook these monsters, but landing one is another story.

FishTargets Tarpon.
